Reduction and resource recycling of high-level radioactive wastes through nuclear transmutation, 5-3; Development of a database for PHITS toward transmutation with a d-Li neutron source

Nakayama, Shinsuke

no journal, ,

In the ImPACT project, irradiation of LLFPs with high-energy neutrons from the d-Li reactions is being considered as a candidate for the transmutation system of LLFPs. In order to contribute to sophistication of transmutation simulation with a d-Li neutron source, a database on d-Li reactions for PHITS has been developed. After developing the database based on the calculated values of DEURACS, simulation based on the database was performed with PHITS and its accuracy was evaluated. As a result, the simulation results based on the database reproduced the measured values of neutron yield from the thick lithium target better than those using the nuclear reaction models implemented in PHITS. It is expected that the present database will contribute to the sophistication of transmutation simulation with a d-Li neutron source.

no journal, ,

Treatment of high-level radioactive wastes produced by reactor operation is are very important problem for nuclear energy. A new nuclear data library JENDL/ImPACT-2018 has been developed as a part of the ImPACT project aiming at reduction and resource recycling of LLFPs through nuclear transmutation. Due to possible creation of a lot of secondary products including unstable nuclei, the nuclear reaction data have been evaluated with improving predictability of theoretical calculations.

no journal, ,

Under the ImPACT project, the neutron capture cross-section measurements of Cs-135 among the long-lived fission products have been performed at J-PARC and Kyoto University. In this presentation, the measurements of energy-dependent neutron capture cross-section for Cs-135 will be reported, and the neutron irradiations of Cs-135 at the KUR will be also presented.

Satellite-based mapping of riverbed height

Miyamura, Hiroko; Esumi, Ayako; Yamada, Susumu; Machida, Masahiko

no journal, ,

Detailed elevation models of river areas are in demand for a variety of applications, such as predicting floods and pollutant dynamics. However, the water flowing in rivers makes it difficult to obtain riverbed depths, even via laser surveying. We therefore propose a method of estimating the riverbed depth based on satellite images and several additional measurement data. Furthermore, we present water flow simulation results based on a three-dimensional river model generated using this method.

First-principles calculations of polarons in actinide dioxide

Nakamura, Hiroki; Machida, Masahiko

no journal, ,

In developing safer and more efficient nuclear fuels, it is crucial to understand their physical properties of oxide fuels using numerical simulations. In the range of high temperature, polarons is expected to play an important role on the thermal properties of oxide fuels. In this paper, we evaluate polaron state in actinide dioxide using first-principles calculations.

Temporal integration of the environmental monitoring results in Fukushima prefecture

Seki, Akiyuki; Murakami, Haruko*; Saito, Kimiaki; Takemiya, Hiroshi

no journal, ,

In the monitoring post established by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, air dose rate measurements have been conducted frequently, and eight years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, so a large amount of data is accumulated. We extracted the data that supports the optimization of monitoring posts by temporally integrating the results of these monitoring posts. In particular, we performed temporal integration using the hierarchical Bayesian model for the set of results of the air dose rate by multiple monitoring posts and estimated the results of the air dose rate of one monitoring post from the other. In many monitoring post pairs within 1km, we obtained statistically most reliable air dose rate results and their confidence intervals.

The random sampling module for ACE format cross sections are developed using modules of FRENDY. This module perturbs the cross sections and other parameters in ACE format cross section library using covariance data. The GODIVA reactor is used and the calculation results of TSUNAMI-1D are compared to verify this module.

no journal, ,

The chemical/physical properties of Cs-chemisorbed deposit could change along with the progression of LWR severe accident (SA). In this study, the influence of temperature change on the properties of Cs-chemisorbed deposit was investigated experimentally. It was found that Cs-Fe-O compounds, which had been formed by chemisorption at 873 K, could transform into Cs-Si-(Fe)-O compounds at 1273 K.
